Oxygen Experiments

Learning Observed

During iExperience Elnaz has been learning about the properties and uses of Oxygen. Firstly Elnaz learnt that all living things need Oxygen.  She showed great capability in being able to explain what it means to be living.  Next she participated in a range of experiments involving Oxygen. Elnaz demonstrated great curiosity by asking lots of questions and making accurate predictions.  She also made connections with the new learning through experiments and being able to describe different processes. During the experiments Elnaz managed herself while participating, making sure she was always in the right place at the right time, doing the right thing.

Adding Two Digit Numbers

Learning Area:  iDevelop (Numeracy) NZC Achievement Objectives:   Level 1 Number and Algebra; Number Strategies Students will use a range of counting, grouping, and equal-sharing strategies with whole numbers and fractions.

Learning Observed

During iDevelop Elnaz has been learning to add two digit numbers together by counting on from the bigger number. Elnaz demonstrated capable thinking and perseverance and was able to quickly adapt to the new learning.  Elnaz began by using a numberline to make single jumps forward, then attempting to make jumps in both tens and ones to make solving the problem easier. As the numbers grew bigger, Elnaz began to source materials and make connections by reverting back to previously learned strategies in order to solve more difficult problems.

Keep practising making jumps in both tens and ones. Begin subtracting two digit numbers from a larger number. Consider other ways to solve problems involving larger numbers.

iExplore (Construction)

Learning Observed In learning habitat four Elnaz has been curious about “What makes a good construction?”  She has enjoyed  investigating types of construction vehicles and their uses, learning about  how cement is made and looking at different types of tools and materials used on  construction sites. Elnaz has enjoyed watching the construction workers working on the new buildings being built on our school grounds and has enjoyed working collaboratively with her peers to design, build and make their very own constructions.

NZC Achievement Objective Speaking Express simple ideas and information, usually drawing from personal experience and knowledge. Visual Arts Share and express ideas about how and way their own and others works are made and their purpose, value and context. Science Find out about the uses of common materials and relate these to their observed properties.

Sequencing Stories

Learning Area:  iExplore NZC Achievement Objectives:   English Level 1; Listening, Reading, and Viewing; Structure Students will… recognise and begin to understand text structures; understand that the order and organisation of words, sentences, and images contribute to meaning.

Learning Observed

This term Elnaz has been learning to sequence and summarise stories during reading workshops.   Elnaz has been working to identify the beginning, middle, and end of a story, before progressing to summarise the story using this language. Elnaz actively participated and contributed in many workshops, initially showing her capability of identify beginning, middle, and end parts from shared stories.  Elnaz then worked collaboratively with others to help them to identify different parts of the story too. After making connections and drawing on her own experiences, Elnaz was able to confidently apply her learning in order to summarise a self-chosen story using the language around beginning, middle and end.

Learning Observed In numeracy we have been learning our number facts. Elnaz is being to develop an understanding of number facts to five. She is beginning to gain an understanding of how to create a number sentence and is beginning to do so with support. Elnaz is beginning to develop counting on strategies and is beginning to demonstrate confidence when using  materials (cubes) as a visual aid. She is beginning to gain an understand that addition can be done in any order and to count on by holding the larger number in his head.

NZC Achievement Objective Know groupings with five, within ten and with ten.

Next Learning Steps Continue to develop counting on strategies. Work on reading , reciting and writing numbers to twenty. Continue to work on writing number sentences to five independently.

Learning Observed In learning Habitat 4 we have been curious about learning our sounds. Elnaz is beginning to develop an understanding of phase one sounds. She is beginning to recognise initial sounds in words. Elnaz is beginning to develop the confidence to contribute in classroom discussions.  Keep trying your best Elnaz!

NZC Achievement Objective Students will associate sounds with letter clusters as well as with individual letters.

Next Learning Steps Begin to read and write initial sounds in words. Begin to write simple sentences using high frequency words.
