Ami & Elnaz began to learn about Storybird when the Hickey hapu wrote the story ‘Quack the Cat’ together. Both girls were happy that Ms Wilkes made them their own accounts.  Some LH6 girls came to work with us and their buddy was Yuvika.

Yuvika patiently helped them to login to their Storybird accounts and helped them use the program so their funny, creative ideas could become a story. Each boy used their own account for their story.  It was challenging for Ami & Elnaz to remember to try to use -at words in the story but they loved looking through all the pictures. It was good that Yuvika helped them stay focused and they created some interesting stories with her.  Yuvika helped the girls to stay on task, and together they created some wonderful creative stories which were inspired by the pictures they selected from the Storybird library.  Initially Yuvika did most of the typing but all of the ideas came from the Ami & Elnaz. Yuvika came to work with them 6 times for 25 minutes.
Ami & Elnaz have very unique ideas and demonstrates a growing understanding that they are writing for an audience and that the purpose is to entertain.  They used some appropriate and purposeful language features as well- such as metaphor, alliteration and rhyme.  Read the amazing stories where embedded below, by clicking on the links or by logging into Storybird.

Here are the links to their story:

Measurement

Learner:  Elnaz             Learning Coach: M Lennon            Date:   16 October 2017
Learning Area:  iDevelop - Mathematics
NZC Achievement Objectives:   Level 1 Mathematics
Measurement:
Students will create and use appropriate units and devices to measure length, area, volume and capacity, weight (mass), turn (angle), temperature, and time.
Patterns and Relationships:
Students will generalise that whole numbers can be partitioned in many ways.
Learning Observed
In a measurement unit during iDevelop Elnaz has been learning to identify different units of length.  She has been participating in a range of practical activities using both standard and non-standard units of measure.

Elnaz has demonstrated her curiosity by making estimations about the length of various objects using non-standard measures (e.g. how many giant steps to the door?), then carrying out investigations through practical activities in order to check her estimations.

During the measurement unit Elnaz is showing she is a capable learner by being able to use language, symbols, and text in order to measure the length of a particular object.

Elnaz is a very connected learner, taking her previous experience with measurement and applying it to her current learning.
Evidence of learning

“The cubes were best to measure because they were all the same size so our answers will be the same.” - Elnaz
Next Learning Steps
  • Keep making estimations about the length of various things.
  • Begin using more standard forms of measurement

Dance Creation

Learner: Elnaz     Learning Coach: S Blake      Date: 11 August 2017
Learning Area: iExperience
Learning Area:  iExperience (The Arts, Dance)
NZC Achievement Objectives:   Level 1 The Arts (Dance)

  • Explore movement with a developing awareness of the dance elements of body, space, time, energy, and relationships.
  • Improvise and explore movement ideas in response to a variety of stimuli.
  • Share dance movement through informal presentation and share their thoughts and feelings in response to their own and others’ dances.
Learning Observed
During iExperience Elnaz has been working on creating the dance for the production.

Elnaz started exploring dance and movement during a taster iExperience and then chose to opt-in to the next week and begin to create the dance for the production. During these workshops she has been making connections between the song and the dance we are creating.

Elnaz has demonstrated her capability by remembering the dance routine and her part in it.  Elnaz has participated and contributed in the dance iExperience and in the production dance opt-in. She has shown her collaboration by sharing her ideas with other learners as well as listening to others share their ideas.

In the production Elnaz will be onstage as a flower. I’m looking forward to seeing her polished performance on stage at Ormiston Junior College on November 23rd.

Learning Area: iDevelop
Learning Area:  iDevelop (Literacy)
NZC Achievement Objectives:   English Level 1; Listening, Reading, and Viewing; Structure
Students will…
  • recognise and begin to understand text structures;
  • understand that the order and organisation of words, sentences, and images contribute to meaning.
NZC Achievement Objectives:   English Level 1; Speaking, Writing and Presenting; Structure
Students will…
  • uses knowledge of word and sentence order to communicate meaning in simple texts
  • begins to sequence ideas and information
Learning Observed
During iDevelop (Literacy) Elnaz has been working on using questions during reading and during writing she has been doing instructional writing.

Elnaz has been exploring questions who, how, when, where, why and what during reading. As a group we read the book First to the Top by David Hill (from the school library) and asked questions about the book and Edmund Hillary’s story.Elnaz demonstrated her thinking capability and curiosity by thinking of questions during reading activities.  Elnaz participated and contributed in many workshops on asking questions and showed her collaboration by sharing her ideas with other learners.

Elnaz has also been using instructional writing to explore how instructions are written and the details that are needed when writing instructions. She was able to help co-construct instructions for how to make a nutella sandwich with the group and then wrote instructions with a buddy about how to make a shape with blocks. Elnaz again showed her great collaboration skills while working with the group and with her buddy.

Oxygen Experiments

Learner:    Elnaz           Learning Coach:  M Lennon              Date: 26 May 2017
Learning Area:  iExperience
NZC Achievement Objectives:   Level 1 Science:  Nature of Science:  Investigating in Science
Students will extend their experiences and personal explanations of the natural world through exploration, play, asking questions, and discussing simple models.
Learning Observed
During iExperience Elnaz has been learning about the properties and uses of Oxygen.

Firstly Elnaz learnt that all living things need Oxygen.  She showed great capability in being able to explain what it means to be living.  Next she participated in a range of experiments involving Oxygen.

Elnaz demonstrated great curiosity by asking lots of questions and making accurate predictions.  She also made connections with the new learning through experiments and being able to describe different processes.

During the experiments Elnaz managed herself while participating, making sure she was always in the right place at the right time, doing the right thing.
Evidence of learning

Next Learning Steps
  • Continue questioning the world around you.
  • Remember to predict and re-predict as you are experimenting.

Adding Two Digit Numbers

Learner:    Elnaz           Learning Coach:  M Lennon              Date: 25 May 2017
Learning Area:  iDevelop (Numeracy)
NZC Achievement Objectives:   Level 1 Number and Algebra; Number Strategies
Students will use a range of counting, grouping, and equal-sharing strategies with whole numbers and fractions.
Learning Observed
During iDevelop Elnaz has been learning to add two digit numbers together by counting on from the bigger number.

Elnaz demonstrated capable thinking and perseverance and was able to quickly adapt to the new learning.  Elnaz began by using a numberline to make single jumps forward, then attempting to make jumps in both tens and ones to make solving the problem easier.

As the numbers grew bigger, Elnaz began to source materials and make connections by reverting back to previously learned strategies in order to solve more difficult problems.
Evidence of learning

Next Learning Steps
  • Keep practising making jumps in both tens and ones.
  • Begin subtracting two digit numbers from a larger number.
  • Consider other ways to solve problems involving larger numbers.
