Storybird Narrative

Success Criteria:  use Storybird to write a creative story with rhyming words. Learning Observed
Ami & Elnaz began to learn about Storybird when the Hickey hapu wrote the story ‘Quack the Cat’ together. Both girls were happy that Ms Wilkes made them their own accounts.  Some LH6 girls came to work with us and their buddy was Yuvika. Yuvika patiently helped them to login to their Storybird accounts and helped them use the program so their funny, creative ideas could become a story. Each boy used their own account for their story.  It was challenging for Ami & Elnaz to remember to try to use -at words in the story but they loved looking through all the pictures. It was good that Yuvika helped them stay focused and they created some interesting stories with her.  Yuvika helped the girls to stay on task, and together they created some wonderful creative stories which were inspired by the pictures they selected from the Storybird library.  Initially Yuvika did most of the typing but all of the ideas came from the Ami & Elnaz. Yuvika came to work with them 6 times for 25 minutes. Ami & Elnaz have very unique ideas and demonstrates a growing understanding that they are writing for an audience and that the purpose is to entertain.  They used some appropriate and purposeful language features as well- such as metaphor, alliteration and rhyme.  Read the amazing stories where embedded below, by clicking on the links or by logging into Storybird. Measurement

NZC Achievement Objectives:   Level 1 Mathematics Measurement: Students will create and use appropriate units and devices to measure length, area, volume and capacity, weight (mass), turn (angle), temperature, and time. Patterns and Relationships: Students will generalise that whole numbers can be partitioned in many ways.

Learning Observed

In a measurement unit during iDevelop Elnaz has been learning to identify different units of length.  She has been participating in a range of practical activities using both standard and non-standard units of measure. Elnaz has demonstrated her curiosity by making estimations about the length of various objects using non-standard measures (e.g. how many giant steps to the door?), then carrying out investigations through practical activities in order to check her estimations. During the measurement unit Elnaz is showing she is a capable learner by being able to use language, symbols, and text in order to measure the length of a particular object. Elnaz is a very connected learner, taking her previous experience with measurement and applying it to her current learning.
